2011 Global LTE Terminal Shipment Overview

According to foreign media reports, there will be more than 100 LTE commercial networks in operation worldwide in 2012. The United States will become an important growth driver. At the same time, spectrum issues will continue to affect LTE development.

Currently, there are 57 LTE commercial networks in 34 countries around the world, and this number is expected to exceed 100 by the end of 2012. By the end of 2012, the number of LTE connections is expected to exceed 22 million. This number is expected to grow to 63 million next year, and by the end of 2014 it will grow sevenfold to 156 million.

Global LTE terminal shipments

Recently, the analysis company Signals and Systems Telecom said that by the end of 2011, global LTE terminal shipments had reached 8 million units. In 2011, LTE terminal revenue reached 2.5 billion US dollars.

As most manufacturers begin to turn to LTE, the annual compound growth rate of the LTE terminal market is expected to exceed 104% in the next five years. By 2016, LTE terminal shipments will reach 300 million units. Shipment of LTE terminals is expected to increase to 32 million in 2012.

Milestones of mobile broadband connections

According to 4GAmericas report, by March 2012, the number of HSPA and LTE mobile broadband connections is expected to reach 1 billion, and this number will double to 2 billion in two years.

The US region will become a key contributor to the "1 billion" milestone. It is expected that by the end of 2012, the number of HSPA and LTE connections in the region will reach 250 million. By 2015, this number will double, and in 2016 it will increase to 700 million.

4G Americas chairman Chris Pearson said: "The ecosystem including HSPA and LTE supports 3GPP technology, which is unparalleled. The current industry progress is related to the necessary spectrum resources-without it, development and deployment will slow down."

Without proper spectrum allocation, network operators will be limited in their ability to provide the best spectral efficiency. The United States is one of the regions with the highest data usage by mobile users worldwide. At the same time, the United States is also one of the regions with the least spectral resources allocated to each user in the world.

Overview of HSPA and LTE in Latin America

Latin America has the same problems and concerns as the United States in terms of spectrum allocation and the rapid auction process. The local government is working to bring more spectrum to free market-oriented auctions.

A total of 72 HSPA commercial networks have been deployed in 31 countries in Latin America, and 31 networks in 19 countries have been upgraded to HSPA +.

There are 5 commercial LTE networks in Latin America, including FDD and TDD modes. It is estimated that by the end of 2012, the number of LTE network connections in this region will reach 300,000.
