Measure method:

There are two common ways to measure optical signal strength in the industry: Microwatts (mW) and dBm. Different platform switches may adopt different methods. Some will choose mW, and some will choose dBm. SFP optical module signal strength usually contains two indicators, namely Tx Power and Rx Power. Tx Power represents the intensity of the optical signal sent by the SFP module; Rx Power represents the intensity of the optical signal received by the SFP module.

Contact between mW and dBm

The mW describes the optical signal strength by means of a power mode. The dBm is an abbreviation of decibel of the measured power to one millwats, and describes the optical signal power ratio in decibels. Cisco switches use dBm and Brocade switches use mW. Both can be converted to each other by the following formula:

8Gbps maximum acceptable signal attenuation: -13.8dBm

From the command output results above, it can be seen that the Cisco/Brocade has different methods for expressing the optical signal strength and both provide the current signal strength and the SFP effective optical signal strength range. As long as the current SFP module is within the valid range, it can be considered that the SFP is in normal operation.

EMC's recommendation range is smaller than the Cisco/Brocade switch's own range. The minimum signal strength is relatively high and the strongest signal strength is relatively low.
