Design challenges and solutions for netbook power management systems

The power management system of the netbook can be divided into the following parts: 1. Battery charging and management; 2. CPU processor power supply; 3. System 5V/3.3V power supply; 4. I/O and graphics card power supply; 5. Display backlight power supply; 6. DDR memory power supply.

If we compare the power requirements of netbooks with laptops and MIDs, smart phones, etc.: Compared with mainstream laptops, netbook batteries are generally 2 to 3 knots, CPU and I/O power consumption is low, and the input adapter voltage is 19V or 12V, 16V. The laptop adapter input voltage is generally 19V, and the battery is generally more than 3 knots. The two are similar in terms of power supply. MID and smartphone power consumption is lower than that of netbooks. It is usually powered by PMU (integrated power management device), and the battery is usually 1 to 2 knots.

One of the main special features of netbooks compared to common laptops is that their processors operate at lower voltages and require a large operating current. Therefore, the main power management design challenge of netbooks is how to solve the power supply problem of the main processor. At present, Intel ATOM processors and ARM architecture processors have a certain market, and power management is slightly different for these two processors. ATOM adopts X86 architecture and consumes more power than ARM architecture. It requires VID (Voltage Identification) to adjust the core voltage. For example, Intel Atom uses IMVP6+ 7-bit DAC VID power supply management, and adopts single-phase or two-phase synchronous step-down DC/DC converter. The ARM processor consumes less power than the X86, generally does not require VID regulation, and uses a single-phase synchronous DC/DC converter.

Whether the netbook is a discrete power management or integrated in the same chip, whether it is discrete or integrated is related to the point-of-load (POL) current and voltage. Due to its low voltage and high current (about 1V, 10A-20A), the CPU processor generally adopts a discrete method. But for I/O, backlighting, and DDR power, consider a highly integrated power solution. With the increasing integration of netbooks, the use of integrated power management is one of the trends.

Current TI power solutions for netbooks include: single-phase D-CAP+ synchronous buck controller TPS51610 for core processors, dual synchronous buck controller TPS51125 for system power with Out-of-AudioT operation and 100mA LDO Wide input voltage synchronous buck controller TPS51117 optimized for light load efficiency of I/O and graphics processors, transfer switch for DDR1/DDR2/DDR3 memory and LDO TPS51116, independent synchronous switch mode Li-ion charging with 2A FET The BQ24103A, a host-controlled multi-compound battery charger BQ24705 with low input power detection, and a 0.7A/2.7-5.5V single high-side MOSFET with fault reporting and active low-level enable function TPS2041/TPS2051.

The TPS51125 is a low cost, dual channel, synchronous buck controller solution for notebook system power supplies with internal 3.3V and 5V LDOs. The D-CAPTM adaptive real-time control architecture supports high efficiency at light loads and fast transient response. The device's integrated Out-of-Audio operation improves noise performance. The device's input supply voltage range is 5.5V to 42V, and the output voltage range is 2V to 5.5V. The TPS51125 can be used in laptops and lightly loaded battery powered devices.

TI's power management products currently have a high market share in both the notebook and netbook markets. For netbooks, TI will provide a total solution to provide customers with competitive power management products in performance and price.
