European Union regulators said on Thursday that tariffs on Chinese-made energy-saving light bulbs should be lifted.
The European Commission said it plans to lift anti-dumping tariffs on energy-saving light bulbs produced in China. These tariffs have caused the price of such bulbs to rise by two-thirds in the European market.
This move by the European Commission runs counter to the actions of the German company Osram AG, which claims that it is unfair to European producers to import such goods at below-cost prices and has been working hard to promote the above tariffs.
EU spokesman Peter Power said Osram is trying to damage the interests of its rival Koninklijke Philips Electronics NV, which makes light bulbs in China. He also said that the EU will propose to cancel the relevant tariffs in the next few months.
In addition, the move is related to the EU's efforts to save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Lighting is one of the main power consumers, and the EU is preparing to reduce energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions by one-fifth by 2020.
The European Union plans to set new energy efficiency standards for light bulbs used in homes, workplaces and on the streets, so soon manufacturers will have to produce energy-efficient light bulbs. At present, most light bulb manufacturers have agreed to phase out the production of incandescent bulbs within eight years.
