ICMP inspection
The Internet Control Message Protocol ICMP is a network layer protocol that provides error reports and other messages sent back to the source regarding the processing of IP packets. RFC 792 has a detailed description of ICMP.
ICMP contains several different messages. Echo Request is generated by Ping command. The host can use it to test the reachability of the network. ICMP Echo Reply message indicates that the node is reachable.
