This week, at the NAB show in Las Vegas, the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG), the international committee behind the image compression standard, introduced a new image format, JPEG XS, which is known as a low A new format for energy compression solutions that delivers higher quality images with low latency over networks such as 5G.

Fraunhofer IIS, one of the joint developers of JPEX XS, said the new ISO mezzanine codec standard provides "visual lossless quality." The new standard supports 8K and frame rates range from 24 to 120 fps. The compression ratio can be up to 6:1.
Professor Touradj Ebrahimi, head of the working group, said in a prepared statement: "This is the first time in the history of image coding that we have compressed less energy to better maintain quality, while we are using less energy. It also speeds up the process, and we want to be smarter about how we do things. The idea is to use fewer resources and use them more wisely. This is a true paradigm shift."
Although JPEX XS wants to replace JPEG, it won't be implemented overnight:
“In the near future, JPEG XS will be used for professional applications such as film editing, space graphics and professional-grade cameras. Consumer electronics will follow, including autonomous vehicles, virtual reality, augmented reality, and multimedia devices and televisions. Wireless connection between the monitor or projector," Professor Ebrahimi said. “In order to be able to use JPEG XS, consumers need to have next-generation devices. As far as software is concerned, they may only need to update, just as they update from time to time on computers and smartphones.â€
The multimedia industry is currently awaiting final approval from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) member states. Once acquired, you can launch JPEG XS-based products and services.
