ON Semiconductor has introduced the NCP5623, an energy-efficient three-output LED driver with an I2C interface and built-in progressive dimming. The device is specifically designed to drive tri-color RGB (red, green, blue) LED decorative light and enhanced LCD backlighting in portable products such as cell phones and MP3 players. The NCP5623 is available in a compact LLGA-12 package and is the smallest RGB LED charge pump driver available in non-bump plastic packages on the market. ![]()
The NCP5623 LED driver receives the processor's instructions through its I2C interface for automatic operation. Its three-way control current outputs are independent, each with a typical matching tolerance of ±0.5% and 32 current levels, allowing one tri-color RGB LED to display more than 32,000 colors. The device incorporates a progressive dimming function that gradually increases or decreases the output current to create a theater-like fade in/out effect. Thanks to the inclusion of a logarithmic current algorithm, the device ensures that brightness and color changes are presented in a smooth and gradual manner.
To maximize battery life, the NCP5623 achieves 94% peak energy efficiency and less than 1 microamp standby current, exceeding the operating range of a typical lithium battery. For typical applications, the device combines the advantages of a very small IC package with the ability to operate with only four passive components. The device also features short-circuit and over-voltage protection to protect the system from LED failure.
