Linear Technology Corporation, a subsidiary of Analog Devices, Inc. (Analog Devices, Inc., ADI), has launched an 8A, 65V input synchronous step-down switching regulator LT8645S. Its unique Silent Switcher 2 architecture uses two internal input capacitors and internal BST and INTVCC capacitors to minimize the thermal loop area. Combining very well-controlled switching edges and an internal structure with an integral ground plane, and using copper pillars instead of bonding wires, the design of LT8645S greatly reduces EMI / EMC radiation. This improved EMI/EMC performance is not easily affected by the layout of the circuit board, which simplifies the design and reduces risk, even when using a two-layer PC board. With a switching frequency of 2MHz in the entire load range, the LT8645S can easily meet the Class 5 peak EMI limit of automotive CISPR 25. The device also provides a spread spectrum frequency modulation function to further reduce the value of EMI / EMC.
The synchronous rectification of the LT8645S provides up to 94% efficiency at a switching frequency of 2MHz. Its 3.4V to 65V input voltage range is ideal for dual battery transportation, 48V automotive and industrial applications. The internal high-efficiency switch can provide up to 8A continuous output current to a voltage as low as 0.97V. The Burst Mode operation of the LT8645S provides a quiescent current of only 2.5μA, which is very suitable for applications such as always-on systems in automobiles/transportation, because such applications require extended battery life. The unique design of the LT8645S can maintain a minimum dropout voltage of only 60mV (at 1A) under all conditions, so that the device can perform well under conditions such as a cold car start. In addition, the fast minimum on time of only 40ns enables 2MHz constant frequency switching from 24V input to 2.0V output, allowing designers to optimize efficiency while avoiding critical noise-sensitive frequency bands. The 32-lead, 4mm x 6mm LQFN package and high switching frequency of the LT8645S allow the use of small external inductors and capacitors, thus forming a compact and high thermal efficiency solution.
LT8645S uses internal top and bottom high-efficiency power switches, and integrates the necessary boost diode, oscillator, control and logic circuits in a single chip. The low-ripple burst mode operation maintains high efficiency at low output currents while keeping the output ripple below 10mVP-P. For applications that need to run with the lowest noise, the LT8645S can be set to run in pulse skipping mode. Its switching frequency is programmable and synchronizable from 200kHz to 2.2MHz. Special design methods and new high-speed technology enable the device to achieve high efficiency over a wide input voltage range, and the current mode topology of the LT8645 achieves fast transient response and excellent loop stability. Other features include internal compensation, power good mark, output soft start/tracking and overheat protection.
The LT8645SEV is available in a 4mm x 6mm LQFN package. The industrial temperature grade version of LT8645SIV has been tested to guarantee operation within the operating junction temperature range of –40°C to 125°C.
