According to foreign media reports, ARM Holdings, a semiconductor design company based in Cambridge, UK, has announced an optimized IP solution designed to support approximately 580 million mid-range mobile terminals expected to be available in the next two years.
According to ARM, the new solution in the mid-range market is optimized to reduce device power consumption, performance and chip size.
The company's partners will announce their plans in due course, but ARM expects this IP solution to be used in mobile devices in mid-2014.
Ian Drew, chief marketing officer and executive vice president of ARM, said: "This market is growing at an alarming rate, and now there is a new set of solutions for semiconductor companies and mobile device manufacturers. The optimized IP suite expands the range of mid-range handset markets."
Introducing advanced features to mid-range mobile terminals
So far, ARM's big.LITTLE processing energy-saving technology is only used for high-end devices, but with the introduction of new solutions, the technology can now also be applied to mid-range smartphones. Compared to the Cortex-A9 processor, the Cortex-A12 processor can significantly increase (40%) ARM partner product performance over the same power range. The Cortex-A12 processor relies on a stand-alone solution for efficiency and provides additional support for big.LITTLE processing technology with the Cortex-A7 processor.
ARM said the Cortex-A12 will bring the features of advanced smartphones and tablets, including virtualization, to mid-range devices.
