The technology industry is not friendly to women. Although measures such as affirmative actions have been taken in recent years, there has been little change. According to a study conducted in March this year, the percentages of women working at Uber, Google and Microsoft are 15%, 20% and 19%, respectively. In the blockchain industry, the situation is similar. Despite being touted as a technology that can bring equality, women are still in a secondary position. However, those who venture into this industry have achieved great success and are making a huge contribution to the future of this ever-evolving industry. One of them is Gayatri Sarkar, a general partner of SportVEST, a blockchain-based sports venture capital fund. Sarkar has achieved great success with companies such as Goldman Sachs, IBM and Boston Commonwealth Bank, and has performed well in every position. According to her, women must take the lead in the blockchain industry.
Sarkar knew from an early age that she would eventually enter a career in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). She was raised by parents who were passionate about science, and she became interested in "not so girly" subjects since she was a child. In an exclusive interview with NullTX, she humorously explained:
If I tell my dad that I want to study the humanities, art or the like, I will definitely be swept out.
Sarkar started by saying that women are not participating in the blockchain industry as they should. She often finds herself the only woman in many meetings. This is largely related to society’s expectations that women are not expected to perform well in STEM subjects.
Sarkar said that in many industries including blockchain, women's opinions and input are often ignored.
I heard other women complain that every time they presented an idea to their boss, they were not seriously considered. However, when a male counterpart puts forward the same idea, he is praised.
This prevents women from making contributions, which might have been able to push their company and the industry to new heights. She explained that for women, not only must they work hard, but they must also work hard to be heard. Sakar herself has not experienced this kind of experience, because she always believes in her authority and thinks she is as qualified as her male counterparts.
As the only female general partner of SportVEST, Sarkar believes that women who enter influential positions must use their positions to promote other women. SportVEST has invested in a global sports economy worth 480 billion U.S. dollars, using blockchain technology to subvert the conservative venture capital industry.
Sarkar used an example to tell a recent incident: IBM appointed a technical steering committee for Hyperledger, but there was no woman, which caused an uproar on social media. A large group of women in the blockchain industry hailed IBM's lack of inclusiveness on Twitter, and this result has paid off. Hyperledger took the initiative to ask Sarkar which women are suitable for her role and asked her for advice.
Despite these challenges, women also have advantages over their male counterparts in certain areas, one of which is holding managerial positions. Women learn to deal with various situations from a very young age, starting at home and turning them into a workplace. This is an advantage that blockchain startups should strive to take advantage of, which is to give women more leadership positions.
So, is it true that women are the worst enemy of women? Sarkar doesn't think so. Such is the enemy of a person's success in any field, even though the enemy also has a gender. As a woman in a male-dominated field, one must strive to be a role model in everything she does and seek out those who agree with her views. The result is the best way to fight prejudice.
Although the current adoption rate of blockchain technology is very low, Sarkar expressed his confidence. Just like other technologies, consumers were anxious at first, but then they began to warm up, forgetting the days when they didn’t have it. Facebook is a good example; before the social media giant became mainstream, consumers didn't even know that they needed to keep in touch with their friends to understand the smallest details of their lives. 14 years later, after 2.23 billion users, Facebook has now become an indispensable platform in the world.
In the blockchain industry, this is an exciting time, Sarka concluded, "When the Internet appeared, I was still in high school," she said, "but with the emergence of the combination of Web3.0 technology and value, We have the opportunity to shape history."
