Silicon Laboratories announced the expansion of its broadcast audio products to include the Si473x AM/FM radio chip family. The Si473x can easily introduce AM/FM radio functions into consumer electronics such as clocks and portable radios, home audio, MP3 players, docking stations and mobile phones. The Si473x is the first highly integrated AM/FM radio chip that integrates all functions from receiving input signals to outputting audio signals into a single chip. Traditional AM/FM radio designs are not capable of providing AM radio functionality due to their large size, high cost, and production difficulties. The Si473x requires only two external components and 0.15 square centimeter of board space, far less than a traditional solution that requires more than 50 components and 10 square centimeters.
Thanks to its advanced digital architecture, the Si473x greatly simplifies design and production. It is the only AM/FM radio chip that does not require manual tuning, which saves several minutes of calibration time per product. Traditional AM/FM solutions may require four stages of manual tuning. The Si473x supports a variety of antennas through on-chip varactors and auto-calibration, resulting in a significant increase in pipeline production efficiency.
The Si473x offers the best AM and FM radio search and adjustment capabilities to reduce interference and improve radio reception. It also has excellent radio sensitivity and channel selectivity, and is able to receive many stations that other AM/FM radios cannot search or correctly identify. The Si473x has market-leading sound quality with adjustable soft mute and other audio enhancements.
The Si4731 is also the only AM/FM radio chip that supports the European Radio Data System (RDS) and the US Radio Broadcast Data System (RBDS) standard. This feature displays information such as station and song names on the LCD screen of any product, giving the user a visual experience similar to a portable media player.
"Amplitude broadcasts have a variety of music, news, sports and talk shows, and they have a wide range of signals, and there are many users around the world," said Tyson Tuttle, vice president of Silicon Laboratories. "We use leading-edge CMOS RF and mixed signals. Knowledge develops an easy-to-design, cost-effective, and high-performance solution that enables manufacturers to offer AM and FM radio capabilities to a variety of applications, including mobile phones and MP3 players."
