The rise of car sharing programs poses a challenge for users to best use different cars. As smartphones become more widely available, new automotive applications based on consumer wireless technologies, including NFC and Bluetooth, are beginning to emerge in areas such as automotive entry systems.

The latest research report by Strategy Analytics, Beyond Information Entertainment, The Rise of Automotive Consumer Wireless Applications in the Automotive Industry, has evaluated these recent developments, including the deployment of the looming UWB positioning system.

Bluetooth and Wi-Fi have been widely deployed in cars, but they are still mostly used in infotainment applications. Cellular communications are also used in eCall (automobile emergency call) systems, and Europe has begun to force cars to install the system. However, wireless communications are becoming the basis for future keyless entry systems, as well as remote services such as paying for fuel and courier to cars and other automotive applications.

Consumers are increasingly using smartphones as storage devices and as a convenient tool for remote car systems, such as remotely setting up and activating air conditioning control systems. “But with the advent of car sharing, these wireless technologies have opened up a new path. Digital keys have been developed. With smartphone applications, digital keys can turn on and control different cars, thus reducing the cost to consumers. And the need for a physical car key that is not so convenient," said Kevin Mak, senior analyst at Strategy Analytics Automotive.

However, the implementation of new wireless applications is full of challenges: for example, the car lacks space to install additional antennas, especially to ensure security against hackers and car theft. Mak added, “In addition to the cryptosystem, precise positioning will be a key factor in passive entry into the system in the future.”
