Galaxy Tab dismantling analysis: low cost is not iPad opponent

Samsung's Galaxy Tab tablet was disassembled and found to be equipped with a huge battery. Market research company iSuppli recently dismissed it and estimated the cost price of Galaxy Tab materials. iSuppli believes that in terms of performance and component costs, the Galaxy Tab can only be seen as a large version of the smart phone, rather than the real opponent of the Apple iPad.

According to iSuppli's estimates, the material cost price of the Galaxy Tab is $205.22, which is a lot lower than the $264.27 of the Apple iPad (16GB+3G). The main reason is that both the size of the model and the screen resolution are reduced.

Andrew Rassweiler, director of analysis and product disassembly services at iSuppli, said: "We don't have to compare the performance of the Galaxy Tab with the Apple iPad. It's a large version of the Galaxy S smartphone, despite its overall design iPad 3G costs less, but the Galaxy Tab's screen resolution, size and technology are not comparable to the iPad, especially the iPad's screen."

The Galaxy Tab tablet is equipped with a 7-inch 1024x600 resolution LCD screen, but the iPad not only uses a larger 9.7-inch screen, but it has a resolution of 1024x768 pixels. Although both use TFT LCD screens, the iPad uses IPS LCD panels with a wider viewing angle and higher image quality.

iSuppli expects the cost price of the Galaxy Tab display and touch system to be $57, while the iPad will reach $98. Among iSuppli's newly dismantled smartphones and tablets, display screens and touch systems cost the most. It also accounts for 27.8% of the Galaxy Tab's material costs. The supplier is Samsung’s Samsung mobile display company.
