Determination of Sulfur Dioxide in White Sugar by Spectrophotometry with Formaldehyde Solution Absorption

Src="http://i.bosscdn.com/blog/nophoto.gif" /></p> A method for the determination of sulfur dioxide in white sugar by the absorption of a pararosaniline hydrochloride by formaldehyde solution. This method replaces mercury salts with formaldehyde, reducing environmental pollution. After the sample is treated, formaldehyde is added. The sulfur dioxide and formaldehyde in the sample solution form stable hydroxymethanesulfonic acid. After adding sodium hydroxide, it reacts with pararosaniline hydrochloride to form a purple-red compound, and the absorbance is measured at 579 nm. The concentration of sulfur dioxide in the white sugar was in the range of 0-60 mg/kg and the absorbance value showed a good linear relationship (r=0.9998), and the detection limit was 0.81 mg/kg. The relative standard deviation of the sample was determined to be between 2.8% and 4.1%, and the recovery was between 93.8% and 98.6%. Compared with the results of the national standard method, there was no significant difference between the two, and the results were satisfactory.
