3D camera keeps track of driver's eyelid movement
By 2018, cars equipped with Kosta's 3D camera system will be off the assembly line. The 3D camera system measures only 49 x 29 mm (approximately 2 x 1 inch) and is embedded in the dashboard: through the steering wheel, the 3D camera "looks" the driver's body and head forward. It records the exact location of the driver's head and captures the driver's blinking action – even if the driver has glasses or sunglasses.
The 3D camera uses infrared light to work even in changing lighting conditions or in the dark. It contains Real3TM 3D image sensor chip from Infineon, which reliably records images over 100,000 pixels at 50 times per second. For each pixel, it recognizes both distance and brightness values. From the depth image of the distance data and the amplitude image of the luminance value, the 3D camera system can identify 49 predetermined points on the driver's face, such as eyes, eyebrows, mouth or nose. The algorithm uses this data to calculate the driver's concentration. For example, if the system detects signs of fatigue in the driver, it will initiate countermeasures.
In addition, knowing the exact position of the driver's head helps to project navigation information on the windshield through a head-up display (HUD) so that the information can be seamlessly cut into the streetscape of the driver's eyes just in the driver's line of sight. In this way, the driver can always see the navigation arrow in the same position in front of him - regardless of the posture of his head.
Sixth Sense: Stereo Imaging with REAL3 3D Image Sensor Chip
The core of the camera system is the 3D image sensor chip. Based on the time-of-flight (ToF) principle, the chip measures the round-trip time required for infrared light from the camera to the object. This time is directly related to the distance of the object. Compared to other 3D measurement methods, depth data can be directly measured by ToF without determining by complex algorithms. In addition, at the end of the production process, the 3D camera with Real3 can be easily and permanently calibrated and only one lens (single camera architecture) needs to be calibrated. Due to the high quality of the data, the 3D ToF camera is not only used to detect the driver's head position and blinking in the car.
