Maxim pushes high-integration Ethernet optical transceiver ICs to deliver high-performance, low-power data center solutions

March 11, 2014, Beijing, China – Maxim Integrated Products, Inc. (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the highly integrated 10GBASE-LR SFP+ optical transceiver IC MAX3956, providing engineers with high-performance, low-power optical module solutions.

In order to meet low power requirements, optical module designers often have to sacrifice high performance in their designs. The MAX3956 SFP+ laser transceiver IC is a good solution to these problems. The device is capable of delivering 50% of the transfer template margin (1k waveform without contact with the eye template edge), and the SFP+ module consumes less than 0.8W total power. Lower power consumption helps reduce data center operating costs (OPEX) and ensures reliable cooling. In addition, the device integrates a high-precision analog monitor for digital diagnostic monitoring (DDM), including temperature, VCC, and RSSI detection for a compact design and reduced bill of materials (BOM) costs. The MAX3956 integrates an analog monitor and a 12-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC), allowing the use of low-cost, "all-digital" microcontrollers.

Main advantage

High integration: Integrated programmable receiver input equalization circuitry and transmitter output de-emphasis circuitry, DDM and high precision analog monitors (including temperature, VCC and RSSI sensors) greatly reduce external component cost.

Low Power: The device's proprietary DC-coupled laser interface allows the SFP+ module to consume less than 0.8W total power and consume only 380mW at 3.3V (typ).

High performance: The deterministic jitter of the MAX3956 is 4.6psp-p (receiver) and 5psp-p (transmitter).

Industry evaluation

· Maxim Integrated Strategic Marketing Manager Stacey McKinney said: "Designers often face power and performance trade-offs in optical transceiver design. The MAX3956 SFP+ transceiver IC now combines many outstanding features to achieve low power and high performance. The perfect combination of performance."

· LightCounTIng Principal Analyst Dale Murray said: "With the increase in large data centers, the demand for 10GBASE-LR modules is increasing. Power consumption has become as important as density, so low-power SFP+ optical transceivers for data centers Operators are critical."
