Professors of Engineering at the University of Florida have developed a new high-efficiency, low-cost light-emitting diode (LED) that can help make this technology more widely available.
Zhibin Yu, assistant professor of industrial and manufacturing engineering, said: "It may completely change the lighting technology. So far, the cost of LED lighting has been a concern. Energy conservation and high cost are not offset. However, this can be changed."
Through the use of a combination of organic and inorganic materials, Yu has successfully developed a new LED technology. These materials dissolve, emit blue, green or red light, so they can be used to make light bulbs.
What's really special about this technology, however, is that its manufacturing process is much simpler than the existing products on the market.
Most LED materials require engineers to cover four or five layers of material to each other to create the desired product or effect. Yu's material only needs one layer. Yu said: "In the manufacturing process, if you need to deal with the problem of multiple layers of materials, this will be a huge challenge."
His research has been awarded by the National Science Foundation, encouraging him to further research basic materials and build a development platform for flexible active matrix organic LED displays. The report has been published in the journal Advanced Materials.
The research is critical to the development of LED technology, which can rapidly reduce national electricity consumption. Although LED lighting fixtures have been sold in stores, they have not been widely adopted due to their material cost and quality issues.
However, LED lights are indeed energy efficient.
According to the US Department of Energy, residential LEDs use at least 75% less energy than ordinary incandescent lamps.
Yu came to the University of Florida (FSU) through the Energy and Materials Strategy Teacher Recruitment Program. He is a researcher at the University of Florida's Institute for High Performance Materials (HPMI). HPMI is a multidisciplinary research organization dedicated to the research and development of advanced materials and manufacturing technologies. According to Richard Liang, director of the HPMI Institute, "HPMI has benefited a lot from Dr. Yu's hard work and other top researchers."
