Nanoleaf founder Yan Sicheng: Became Li Ka-shing's "Technology Clip"

Dressed in plaid shirts and slacks, the intimacy is still somewhat studentish. In a pure accent of English, occasionally a few words of Chinese characters are emerging. This is one of the founders of Nanoleaf, Qi Sicheng.

Like the other two founders, Zhu Jialu and Tom Rodinger, all three are 80s and are buddies from the University of Toronto, Canada. With an LED bulb of the same shape, it won the favor of Li Ka-shing, the richest man in Asia, and the three young people ushered in the opportunity to change their destiny.

"When we received a phone call to meet with Mr. Li, I was both excited and nervous, and only prepared for a short time. None of us grew up in Asia. Although I know that he is a big man, the psychological pressure is not that big. "Sui Sicheng smiled.

"We don't look up, but we look for investors on an equal basis, telling them what products we have, the direction of future development, and our respective backgrounds and advantages," he recalls.

Li Ka-shing saw that this alternative light bulb was immediately attracted to the unique shape and had been asking how to disassemble and assemble the light bulb. Yan Sicheng revealed, "At that time, Mr. Li wanted us to take a second-generation product sample that could automatically adjust the brightness, but at that time it was our only sample, we had to get it back."

In January 2013, three passionate entrepreneurs funded the launch of the LED light bulb through the US crowdfunding platform Kickstarter. Although the first generation of Nanoleaf bulbs is priced at $35, after eight months of launch, the monthly sales have reached 4,000-5,000, and it is very popular in North America.

The claim to be "the most energy-efficient LED bulb in history" is no longer a traditional arc shape, but an eleven-sided body that is folded into a circuit board. Since the shape of the bulb board is folded up and does not require heat dissipation, it saves 88% of the electricity consumption compared to the conventional bulb and can last for more than 30,000 hours, which is much longer than the average incandescent lamp life of 1500 hours. The annual cost of electricity for a light bulb is only $1.84.

Due to Nanoleaf's avant-garde design concept and high technology, there was a wave of financing on the Internet. They received financing from 5,746 individual investors in 81 countries, raising a total of US$270,000, far exceeding their original plan. A goal of $20,000.
